Phase Change plus Evaporative cooling
for maximum cooling power! Great for Hunting or Military when you need the best!
Aquality is proud to introduce one of the only
military/hunting cooling vests which couples both evaporative and phase change
cooling technologies into one single vest.
It has been designed so that it allows soldiers and
marines to wear their OTV directly on top of the cooling garment, which is
worn over the T-shirt. This configuration is necessary to allow for the
rear phase packs to be exchanged while on patrol without removing any
garments or armor. Optional detachable evaporative cooling sleeves can be
purchased and attached to
the vest to further boost evaporative cooling effectiveness under heavy
heat stress/exercise conditions.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Level 1 consists of wearing
the hydration vest, which soaks and retains water from an initial soaking
to cool for hours/days but does not wet the underlying “T” shirt. This
would likely suffice for cooling (under BDU/DCU blouse) if armor was not
worn. To control the greatly increased heat stress from interceptor armor,
add the phase change packs to the cooling vest’s pockets as shown in
pictures, they will maintain a constant cool temperature of 58 degrees for
2+ hrs., depending on ambient temperature. These packs are relatively
lightweight but made to withstand the extreme abuse of sand abrasion
without leaking.
The head cooling consists of
the Level 1 hydration beanie cap, which works comparably to the vest. For
additional cooling the Level 2 system for the MICH/kevlar helmet involves
properly sized phase change packs, which go directly into the helmet. They
are best for the MICH but work equally as well with the
kevlar.
The neck piece, consists of a DCU
hydration piece. The neck guard on the interceptor limits the size of neck
cooling equipment.
This system actually
exceeded our expectations when tested, based on O.I.F. experience, this
represents the most effective means of controlling heat in a combat
environment.
THE ULTIMATE "HEAT STRESS TEST" :
Exercising in full gear in a 150-degree
SAUNA !
In order to simulate
anticipated summer heat stress, we tested the gear in a sauna of approx.
150-170F (the thermometer broke at 140F+rising). The temperature was hot
enough to make metal burn exposed skin on contact.
We conducted the test for 30
minutes, which included full body armor/kevlar, and physical exertion. To
simulate the physical activity of soldier patrols we did push ups (in
armor) and squats/knee bends. Despite the searing heat, the cooling gear
was comfortable. The simulation was halted after 30 minutes in the hot
sauna room due to
accomplishing the simulation objective, and to prevent facial burning from
the hot metal buckles/snaps on the kevlar helmet.
Subsequent inspection of
the cooling gear revealed the phase change packs in the helmet had
expended approximately 50% of their charge, while the packs in the vest
still retained 75-80% of their original charge. The hydration cooling
portion appeared to remain close to full charge.
This demonstrates that
the gear will effectively cool a soldier during the intense Iraq
summer, and preserve physical capabilities. Hunters can also benefit
from the extra cooling power when on-the-move after quarry.
Use of recommended
optional "swap-out" phase-change insert
packs and cooling bags for recharging packs on the road would allow for extension of maximal cooling for
prolonged periods of time, and should be considered for long missions.
We are happy to accept further testing recommendations.
